Delayed, But Not Forgotten: The CZ Year-End Pop Culture Survey Returns for 2020! The past year has seen the postponement of several annual traditions from sporting events to awards shows. This annual tradition of ours (now in its 9th rendition) is no exception. If you're wondering why it took so long for me to make this announcement, here were the two main reasons: 1) Several 2020 movies of note, such as Chloe Zhao's NOMADLAND, weren't in theaters or available on streaming services until January and February 2021. So, I wanted to give people more time to watch those things before submitting their lists. 2) I wanted to give more breathing room to people after also asking them to submit lists for the Best of the 2010s poll this past summer. So now, instead of the usual mid-February deadline for this annual survey, I've set the deadline to submit your 2020 lists for Thursday, April 15th, 2021 Saturday April 17th, 2021 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. You can send those lists to me either by e-mail (mj1599@aol.com), via Twitter DMs (@avclubcz), or by posting them here on the series finale's Disqus comments section.Other than the change in the nomination period, this survey will be operated in much of the same manner as in years past. For the year 2020, I wanna know what you thought were the best artistic achievements in the following categories: -Albums -Films -Podcasts -Songs -TV Episodes -TV Programs Each of the six categories should all be part of their own, separate lists. So, don't worry about comparing albums to movies, or whatever other combination you can think of. The maximum number of items you can rank for each category is 20. The minimum you need to include in a category for your rankings to be counted is 5. You have an average of 15 points to distribute for each item you rank. So if you rank 10 albums, you have 150 points to give out among those albums. Or, if you have 15 shows, then your spread is increased to 225 points. Also, the maximum number of points you can give to any one item is 30. The minimum is, of course, 1 (please do whole numbers; no half points). Please do not distribute points strategically. For instance, let's say you're confident THE MANDALORIAN is going to be near the top of the TV list and you're concerned I MAY DESTROY YOU isn't going to finish high in the final polling. You like THE MANDALORIAN more and you would rank it higher but you decide to give I MAY DESTROY YOU more points because you want it to place better. Again, please don't do that. Distribute your points purely on how much you like something. Also, make sure your lists are ranked. And make sure that as you go down your list, each subsequent show (or episode or whatever) has less points (or it can have the same - just make sure they don't have more) than the one above it. Within each category, the following criteria should be met: -TV Programs: A show must have released at least 7 episodes to American audiences during the 2020 calendar year, or released at least 50% of its season in 2020. So a series like THE GOOD PLACE is not eligible to be on your list since it aired only four episodes out of its 14 episode fourth season during that year. Web series can be included into this category as well. However, the series must a) have episode lengths of at-least 11 minutes and b) air episodes on a well-known streaming platform that's available in the United States (this includes YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Vimeo, HBO NOW, Britbox, Disney Plus, Facebook Watch, the gone-but-not-forgotten Qubi, and well...probably anything else that you can think of). -TV Episodes: Must have premiered for American audiences (whether on-the-air or on a streaming platform) between January 1st, 2020 and December 31st, 2020. One-off specials (such as the SOUTH PARK PANDEMIC SPECIAL) are also eligible for this category. -Albums: Must have been released between January 1st, 2020 and December 31st, 2020. This category does not include any 2021 albums that may have been leaked in 2020. -Songs: Preferably, I would like for you to only add songs that were released on or after January 1, 2020. However, I will be flexible in this category by saying that you could add a 2019 song on your list as well, if that song was WAY more well-known and prominent in the zeitgeist during 2020 than in 2019. For example: The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights" was released back in November 2019, but it's still allowed for this list because 2020 was when it skyrocketed to #1 on the Billboard charts and became one of the year's biggest pop hits. Songs released in 2019 will still be excluded, however, if they already appeared in the top 25 of our 2019 poll. -Films: Must have made their world premiere sometime during the 2020 calendar year (or during the 2019 film festival circuit), and must have been available for American audiences to legally view prior to February 28, 2021, whether through a movie theater screening or through a on-demand/streaming platform. So a movie like THE FATHER is eligible (released in theaters Feb. 2021 while also premiering in Sundance 2020) while JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH (didn't premiere until Sundance 2021). Short films are also eligible for this category. Also, just because a few people have already asked: each installment of Steve McQueen's SMALL AXE counts as its own movie. Similarly, Jon Bois' THE HISTORY OF THE SEATTLE MARINERS also qualifies as a movie. -Podcasts: In order to be qualified, a podcast must have released at least six episodes between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. The podcast must have also been intended for radio or streaming audiences only. Podcasts that are just audio clips of stuff from others mediums like television shows (such as the Pardon the Interruption podcast or The Rachel Maddow Show) are not eligible. For a more closer look into how the final lists turn out, here's a link to all the 2019 rankings that were revealed last February: avclubcommunists.freeforums.net/thread/429/2019-year-end-culture-surveyHope to see as much lists as possible this time around! I will be positing regular reminders of the list prior to the deadline, in case you forget about it.
