Announcing: The Best-of-the-2010s CZ Pop Culture Poll
Since most of us are under lockdown and not doing anything with our free time except for staying at home, I'd figure now would also be as good of a time as any to announce that I've begun the submission period for our poll ranking the best pieces of art from the decade that was the 2010s.
The rules and format of this poll with be very similar to our annual year-end polls, except this time I've expanded the amount of items eligible to anything that was produced and released to the public throughout the entire decade, and not just during a particular year from that decade.
Here are the categories you can submit your polls for: -Albums -Songs -Musical Artists -Films -Film Performances -Film Directors -TV Shows -TV Episodes -TV Performances -Podcasts -Video Games -Comic Books
Because of the special nature of this poll, I also included Musical Artists, Film Performances, and TV Performances as a category you can submit lists for the first time. In addition, I've brought back the Comic Books and Video Games categories, which haven't been used in our year-end polls since 2014.
I usually give about a two-month period between when I first announce the year-end polls and the deadline to submit your lists, and this time is no exception. You will have between now and June 21st, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. PDT to turn in your lists. You can send those lists to me either by e-mail (mj1599@aol.com), via Twitter DMs (@avclubcz), or by posting them here on this board. Since I know some of you will have problems forgetting which items will be eligible for the poll (so! much! content!), I will also aim to create some kind of website later on in order to help you know which items you can select.
Lists format are exactly the same as in the year-end polls. The maximum number of items you can rank for each category is 20. The minimum you need to include in a category for your rankings to be counted is 5.
You have an average of 15 points to distribute for each item you rank. So if you rank 10 albums, you have 150 points to give out among those albums. Or, if you have 15 shows, then your spread is increased to 225 points. Also, the maximum number of points you can give to any one item is 30. The minimum is, of course, 1 (please do whole numbers; no half points).
Please do not distribute points strategically. For instance, let's say you're confident MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is going to be near the top of the list and you're concerned UPSTREAM COLOR isn't going to finish high in the final polling. You like FURY ROAD more and you would rank it higher but you decide to give UPSTREAM COLOR more points because you want it to place better. Again, please don't do that. Distribute your points purely on how much you like something.
Also, make sure your lists are ranked. And make sure that as you go down your list, each subsequent show (or episode or whatever) has less points (or the same amount of points) than the one above it.
Within each category, the following criteria should be met:
Albums: Please choose only the albums which were released between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2019. 2020 albums which were leaked in 2019 are not eligible.
Songs: Only songs which were released between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2019 are eligible. No exceptions.
Musical Artists: This is kind of a broad category. Does it mean that you choose the artists who put out the most outstanding music during the 2010s? Does it mean that you choose the artists who had the biggest impact on the industry, as well as the culture at large? For the purposes of this poll, I'm gonna leave that question open-ended and let you decide for yourself. However, I ask that you only focus on what that artist did during the 2010s, and only the 2010s.
Films: This category will be a bit different than the year-end film poll. Unlike the year-end polls, which makes a film eligible in the year in which they were commercially released in North America, this poll is only concerned with movies that made its world-premiere in the 2010s. So, as long as a movie had its first-ever screening between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2019, then it's okay to pick it. If the film was released in North America in the 2010s yet premiered in 2009 or earlier (such as Jacques Audiard's A Prophet, which debuted in the 2009 Cannes Film Festival), then it is not eligible. Short films, made-for-TV movies and films that premiered on a streaming service (like Netflix) are also allowed in this category.
Film Performances: Which acting performances (both lead and supporting) stood out to you as among the decade's bests? Let us know! Just make sure that the acting work came in a movie which premiered between January 1st, 2010, and December 31st, 2019. An actor may be selected more than once for different performances
Film Directors: Only people who directed at least two movies that came out in the 2010s are allowed to be chosen. Directors of short films and made-for-TV movies, like Don Hertzfeldt, are also eligible. Also, please only consider the motion pictures that these artists made when ranking this category, and not their overall body of work from the decade. So, for instance, don't place Steven Soderbergh on your list because of how much you liked The Knick, or don't select David Lynch because of how much you liked Twin Peaks: The Return (which is, and I cannot stress this enough, a TV show). Consider only their movie output.
TV Shows: Only shows which premiered and completed at least one full season in North America during the 2010s are eligible. Non-American shows which were never legally made available to US audiences are not eligible. When doing your lists, only consider the quality of the season (or seasons) which aired in the 2010s, and not anything that came before or since. So something like Mad Men (which aired new episodes on TV between 2010 and 2015 yet premiered in 2007) can only be evaluated on the stuff that came out in the 2010s (which were seasons 4 through 7). Web series can be included in this category, as long as they had episodes of at least 11 minutes in length and released new episodes on a well-known streaming platform that's available in the United States (this includes YouTube, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Vimeo, HBO NOW, Britbox, Disney Plus, Facebook Watch, SeeSo, and well...probably anything else that you can think of).
TV Episodes: Must have premiered between January 1st, 2010 and December 31st, 2019. If the episode came from a show that was never legally available for United States viewers, then it is not eligible.
TV Performances: Please select the most outstanding performances an actor had during a single TV show. If they're sketch comedy performers, or an actor who played multiple roles like Tatiana Maslany in Orphan Blank, then you can list them as playing "multiple characters" on that show. This includes both lead acting roles and supporting roles. Guest appearances (such as Katt Williams in Atlanta) are not eligible. In the case of actors who played the same character prior to 2010, please consider only the quality of their work in episodes and seasons of shows that aired between January 1st, 2010, and December 31st, 2019. If there is a performance in which the actor played the same character across multiple shows (such as Bob Odenkirk playing Saul Goodman in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul), please only list that performance once.
Podcasts: If a podcast released at least six episodes at any point during the 2010s, then it's eligible. Please only judge podcasts based on its quality during the 2010s, and not in any decade before or since. Podcasts which are just recordings of shows from other mediums (such as the Pardon the Interruption podcast, which just has the audio from the weekday ESPN show of the same name) are not eligible. Podcasts that alter their title for each season (such as the U Talkin' U2 To Me?/R U Talkin' R.E.M. RE: ME? podcast with Scott Aukerman and Adam Scott) are counted as one.
Video Games: Must have been released between January 1, 2010, and December 31, 2019. Please rank only single video games and single seasons of video games. This category may include console games, mobile games, and PC games.
Comic books: Must have been a series that released at least seven issues between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2019.
