The 2016 Film Critics' Top-Ten Poll of Polls

During the last few years, I have taken upon the task of collecting as many film critics' top ten lists as I can and create one single, aggregate list of the year's most acclaimed movies. The process is pretty straightforward:
a) For the standard 1-10 list, I give ten points to the #1 film, nine points to the #2 movie, and so on and so forth until #10 gets just a point.
b) For the lists which are unranked or arranged alphabetically, I give each movie 5.5 points (because (10+9+8+...+1)/10=5.5)
c) For the lists that have a #1 spot listed and the other nine unranked, I give ten points to the #1 movie and 5 points to each of the other nine.

For 2016, I decided to count 400 different top ten lists (up from 370 in 2015). Most of them were from individual film critics and writers, although some staff lists were also included if there wasn't a mention of their staff members choices. Also, while the vast majority of the lists were from American critics and American websites/publications, I also included lists from countries like Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Poland and Japan to give it more of an international feel.

Anyways, here is the 2016 poll's top 100. The films are primarily ones that were released in the United States during the year, although some 2015 movies make appearances too due to the international critics and late releases here in America.

Just like in past years, I dedicated a portion of my late December and early January towards collecting hundreds of year-end movie top-ten lists, and making one great, big aggregate ranking out of all of them. The following are the rankings for the year 2015.

A few notes before the reveal:
a) Overall, about 370 top-ten films lists were counted (up from last year's 300 lists). Most of the lists were from individual critics, although I did include some staff lists from certain publications. If a website or publication had both a staff list and individual ballots, the latter was included and not the former.
b) The majority of the lists were made by critics based in the U.S. However, I tried to make the list more international, which is why I also included critics from Canada, the U.K., France, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, India, Puerto Rico, and Poland.
c) Not all of the lists that I chose had the same rules as to what could and could not be counted. It appears as if the criteria of most lists was movies with 2015 theatrical release in their local region. That said, certain other lists included any film that premiered in 2015, while some lists allowed for TV movies to be included, too. This is why you have the case of such films like The Lobster making an appearance despite not being released in the U.S. until spring 2016, or films like Inherent Vice making an appearance due to their winter 2015 release in most places.
d) For the most part, there were three different categories of top-ten lists that were counted in the ranking:
-Category 1: The standard top-ten lists, with films ranked anywhere between #1-#10. For these lists, I gave each movie 10 points if they got the #1 spot, 9 points if they got the #2 spot, 8 points if they got the #3 spot, etc.
-Category 2: Top-ten lists without rankings. For each of the films listed, 5.5 points were given (10+9+8+...+1=55 total points/10 movies=5.5 points).
-Category 3: The lists that didn't fit into either of the previous two categories. This included a list with a #1 film and nine separate runner-ups, a Category 2-esque list with more than ten films listed (but less than 20), and more. Each of these lists were given their own special points treatment.
e) Total amount of films that were mentioned: 371. Try to guess which ones were and were not mentioned. The answers may surprise you.

Remember that time last year where I combined 150 year-end film polls by critics into one single aggregate list? Well, I did it again for the year 2014, but with 300 critics polls this time!

A few notes before I get into the big reveal:
a)Same points system from last year applies to this year. For each top ten list I used, I would apply points for each of the films in a way that led to a total of 55 points per list. For the simple top tens that ranked films #1-#10, I would give ten points to the #1 film, nine points to the #2 film, eight points to the #3 film, etc. For the top tens that just listed the films without any rankings, I handed each of the films 5.5 points. For the top tens that listed a clear #1 film but left the other nine films on the list unranked, I provided ten points to that #1 film and five points to the others.
b)Overall, the majority of the lists I used were from American critics and American-based publications. However, I also used several top ten lists from Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France, Poland and Italy.
c)In total, I counted 309 films that were mentioned by at least one top-ten list, including items that I normally wouldn't count as movies (such as The Knick and The Americans, which are TV shows). Out of those 309 films, 66 received at least one first place vote.
d)Because this was an international batch of film critics that I picked out, it should be noted that several of them listed movies that had already premiered in North America before 2014 began (movies like Inside Llewyn Davis, 12 Years a Slave and Her, which were first released in 2013) due to those movies not arriving in their respective countries until this past year. Furthermore, there are also several movies on the list that premiered in 2013 but were not released in North American theaters until 2014 (movies like Only Lovers Left Alive and The Immigrant, which both premiered in the 2013 Cannes Film Festival).

Hey, there! Ever read a bunch of year-end top-ten movie lists this past month and wondered "If I could combine hundreds of film critics' lists together into one large aggregated list, which movies would come out as the most acclaimed?" If you have, well then you're in luck!

For the past couple of days, I have gone through top-ten lists of 150 film critics in both the U.S. and internationally (more specifically the U.K., France, Ireland, Australia, and Canada), and given each film listed a certain amount of points between 1 and 10. 10 points was given to any film placed #1, 9 points was given to any film placed #2, and so on and so forth until only 1 point was given to a film placed #10. For the critics who decided to chicken out and not rank their top tens, I just decided to give 5.5 points to each of their chosen films (since 10+9+8+...+1=55 and 55/10=5.5). So basically this poll kind of operates similarly to the annual HitFix TV poll.

NRRJ PRESENTS: The 2017 Film Critics Poll of Polls

I've done this every year since 2013. Essentially, the premise is that I collect as much top ten lists from critics and filmmakers from across the U.S. and around the globe into an Excel doc and then create an ultimate aggregate list out of them. I normally release the final results around New Year's, but I thought about waiting until later this month for ballots from the Village Voice poll to come out. However, the VV poll took too long, so I included additional writers from others sites like the Toronto Film Review as a replacement, putting the amount of lists I used from 2017 to 426 (up from 400 in 2016).

The process for making the list was pretty straightforward:
a) For the standard 1-10 list, I give ten points to the #1 film, nine points to the #2 movie, and so on and so forth until #10 gets just a point.
b) For the lists which are unranked or arranged alphabetically, I give each movie 5.5 points (because (10+9+8+...+1)/10=5.5). Some lists included had twelve movies (for some reason), and for those I gave each movie roughly 4.5 points.
c) For the lists that have a #1 spot listed and the other nine unranked, I give ten points to the #1 movie and 5 points to each of the other nine. If they had the #1 and #2 listed, but the other ten unranked, then I gave the #1 movie 10 points, the #2 movies 9 points, and the rest of the top ten 4.5 points.

The majority of the critics that I used were from the U.S. and Canada. However, I always try to get more international critics, which is why I also included people from the U.K., Ireland, France, Spain, Peru, Poland, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, and Iran. This is why you will see some stuff like movies released in 2016 in the U.S. appearing on the 2017 top tens, because the commercial release dates can vary by country.

A few more interesting things about this list:
-Although there were more critics lists tabulated than ever, the amount of points given to this year's #1 movie (Get Out) was lower than the first place finisher in 2016, 2015, and 2014. Part of this has to do with Get Out getting way fewer number one choices (a mere 40) than the previous highest-placing movies (for comparisons sake: Moonlight had 92 number one spots last year). Also, I'd like to think it's because there were many more movies selected (448) than ever before, which spread the points out.
-Also, this year's lists were really flexible when defining "film" as I saw everything from Twin Peaks: The Return to the Nathan For You season finale, from Logan Lucky to both Logan and Lucky as well as both a Wonderstruck and Wonder Woman.
-Speaking of Twin Peaks, it had the highest amount of points per pick out of any movie in the top one hundred that I've ever seen. There were only about 34 selections, yet nearly all of them were #1 picks, which hella inflated its points total.
-Finally, for those of you looking for a Best Picture forecast, I would just like to note that the winners from 2010-2016 never appeared lower than 7th on my polls (that was Argo in 2012), so you can probably eliminate something like The Post (and maybe even Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri?) from contention.

NRRJ PRESENTS: THE 2018 FILM CRITICS POLL OF POLLS

Since 2013, I have embarked on a quest to create a comprehensive, aggregate year-end film poll based on hundreds of the various top 10 surveys that have been released by major websites and film publications. The same quest took place the last few days for the year that was 2018.

Some facts about this recent list before I begin:
a) In total, 425 "top-10" lists were used (including jmunney's list for Newscult). I put "top 10" in quotes because I occasionally cheated and include some top 11-15 in the process as well, provided that those top 11-15 lsits were unranked.
b) Most of these lists were assembled by American critics and publications. However, I did include a bunch of lists from critics out of Canada, Puerto Rico, the UK, Ireland, Poland, Italy, Spain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Iran, Peru, Brazil, and Russia (to name a few). So if you see a movie placed high that came out in 2017, it's likely because it made the list among critics whose countries couldn't see them until 2018 (like Phantom Thread).
c) Some of the critics lists weren't even critics. I also included some top tens from that Indiewire article of acclaimed directors' favorite films, and even Obama's top fifteen.
d) Staff lists counted as one person, and if a website had individual breakdowns of top-tens than I resorted to using each individual list rather than the staff list.
e) Points breakdown was similar to past years. For the standard 1-10 list, I give ten points to the #1 film, nine points to the #2 movie, and so on and so forth until #10 gets just a point. Here's a link to all my previous lists, done for each prior year this decade (2010-2017). Overall, it's not a surprise that Roma finished atop the poll. It's done really well among critics (96% RT, 96 MC) and has won the most Best Film awards among critics associations. Now will this mean it'll get Best Picture? Ooddmakers are still calling the race close, and it has no Golden Globe or SAG nominations. However, it should be noted that no film this decade has won Best Picture while placing lower than 7th (Argo in 2012 and The Shape of Water), so if something like A Star Is Born or Green Book pulls it off, it will be an outlier compared to the last few years. If anything, it seems like Black Panther may be its biggest challenger. But we'll see come February.

The following were motion pictures that placed within the top 100 of my most recent aggregate poll of film critics year-end top-ten lists. This year, 450 different lists were chosen for this poll (up from 425 the previous year). The majority of the film critics were American, but there's also several critics from Canada, Latin America, Europe, Asia, and Australia as well. The films chosen here also vary. Most films were chosen based on them being commercially released during 2019 in the critic's home country, while others got chosen because they had their premiere screening in 2019. Because of this, expect to see some of these movies re-appear in the 2020 poll.

The following is an aggregate of 450 critics lists I collected which ranked the ten best movies from the year 2020. These lists compromised of critics from across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, India, Peru, Bolivia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Ireland and Japan. Because not every country had the same distribution schedule, certain movies appeared on the list which already came out in 2019 for critics of other countries to see. Similarly, there are some movies here which appeared only in film festivals in 2020 but not in a general release. There were two types of lists collected for the aggregate ranking: a standard ranked top-ten list (where the #1 movie received 10 points, the #2 movie received 9 points, and on and on until the #10 movie received just one point) and an unranked list (where each movie in it received 5.5 points). Overall, 644 items received at least one selection from the lists I collected, and that included some television programs, music videos, and art installations.

Jane Campion's latest feature, The Power of the Dog placed atop my aggregate rankings of film critics' 2021 movies top 10 lists, with a sizeable advantage over runner-up Drive My Car. This list was created by collecting 450 different top 10 lists, assigning between 1 to 10 points for each movie selected based on how well they placed within the list (with 5.5 points being given to each film in an unranked top 10 list). This ranking includes lists mostly from American film critics, though I did also use some lists from critics in Canada, Mexico, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Japan, France, Spain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia, and Argentina.

THE 2022 FILM CRITICS POLL OF POLLS

Every year, I like to collect hundreds of top ten lists from film critics around the world in order to create one big, aggregate poll ranking the year's bests. This year, a record 475 lists were sampled from film critics not just in the United States and Canada but also Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Colombia, Chile, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Poland, Iran, Russia, Spain, Italy, and Japan. Each film in a top ten list was given a number of points. If it was an unranked list, each film received 5.5 points. If it was a ranked list, then 10 points would be given to the first place film, with each lower-ranked film after receiving one point less until the tenth place film earned just a point.

Overall, 547 films were selected at least once. The following finished in the top 100. The battle for first was the closest finish I've seen yet, with the top two separated by just 26.5 points.
