Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

After my epic essay on the 2nd, I wanted to keep things simple for
the alternate. I considered singing Bea Arthur’s song from the Star Wars
Holiday special, but ultimately decided against it - it’s hard to get
the right inflection on the “Goodnight - but not goodbye” part anyway.
No, I instead realized that if I changed my topic to one that befit my
avatar, I could outsource the bulk of the writing to my past self. This
version of me was fifteen, going on sixteen, and just as interested in
Santa as I am today. He was almost, but not quite, ready to join into
the burgeoning CZ. And he was foolishly trying to do NaNoWriMo.
I’ve since realized that WriMo isn’t for me, since I’ve already
written a couple novels, but I have to do them at a slower pace than
Wrimo’s frantic 2700 words a day, or I feel like they aren’t worth
writing. But 2011 me hadn’t realized that the event and my writing style
don’t mesh. So I, being me, decided to write a serious sci-fi
novelization of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I had it mapped out
pretty well, but the frame story I had included for it wasn’t working
and in the end the pace that Wrimo requires proved too much to keep up
with. I abandoned the project. But part of it survived, a large chunk
that I’m rather proud of. I put it on Google Docs for your enjoyment.
This part of the story takes place after the conflicts on Mars have
been established, and after the Martians have talked to Chochem, come to
Earth, and picked up the kids (here called William and Beth). The
Martian crew has been assigned actual positions based on their apparent
skillsets in the movies. There was a subplot that I added involving the
Cold War battle between the American and Soviet militaries as they
attempted to reach the North Pole to steal Santa’s technology; and any
references to the character ‘Valenkov’ are part of that.
Looking back on the thing, I can see why it probably wouldn’t work
as I conceived of it. But I did certainly enjoy writing these scenes,
and I hope you enjoy reading them. Have a happy Septober.
