"Ends"
-In which Daisy fears an end to her living arrangement with Tim. Brian and Marsha end. Sarah and Duane end. Mike's expulsion from Territorial Army ends. And, finally, Tim and Sarah end.
-Discoveries are made, as we learn an important piece of backstory on the show's longest and sweetest committed relationship. If Tim hadn't taunted him to jump out of that tree years ago, Mike's retinas would be properly attached, and he'd serve in the "regular" army. This lends nice shading to Tim's guilt and protectiveness over Mike today. -I'm enamored with the story of Mike's expulsion from Territorial Army back in 1994. On weekend maneuvers, he stole a Chieftain tank and attempted to invade France! En route, Mike stopped at Euro Disney - because of course he did - and was later captured having a grand time on Space Mountain. But he's back in the Territorial Army now, owing to his ability to see both butterflies AND bombs. And perhaps to some sandwiches made by Tim.
-Mike has a nice moment, with his lovely explanation of why Daisy is bothered over Tim and Sarah's meetup. From this, we learn six months have passed in the Spaced universe.
-Marsha reassures Daisy that she can stay, should Tim move out. In fact, she'd like Daisy to stay as long as she pleases. This illustrates the trust that's been built over the past six months, but it also serves to terrify Daisy. She imagines being stuck there, alone and aging - which kickstarts a furious burst of writing to the delightful tones of Murder She Wrote's theme. Sometimes when you don't know exactly where you're headed, and haven't a clue how to start, fear of becoming what you DON'T want to be is a powerful motivator.
-So Daisy fears an end to her living situation with Tim, who gets exactly what he thinks he wants when Sarah re-enters his life. But after considering the reality of his situation now - his fantasy of reconciliation with Sarah is what actually ends.
-I loved that right after Tim's call Daisy paused for a beat, glanced at Colin, and decided to bring him to the pub. She could sense that Tim's evening went unexpectedly, and chose to bring Colin along for comfort. Such attention to character detail! This show is SO GOOD.
-Another favorite of mine was that ending scene in the pub - Tim and Daisy dancing and discussing his porn collection, with Colin perched on the table. The relaxed easiness of it all perfectly encapsulates their relationship up to this point.
-"We're constantly led to believe in resolution, in re-establishment of the ideal status quo, and it's just not true. Happy endings are a myth, designed to make us feel better about the fact that life is just a thankless struggle." Then, "Do you want to dance?" -So we have a happy ending to this episode, but I can't say this brings us closer to them becoming a couple in the end. Tim's speech alludes to them maybe NOT ending up together. But I have to agree with Todd and say I hope they at least give it a try.

Good stuff, Janet. I didn't even notice that Daisy brought Colin along when she went to meet Tim. I'm more impressed watching this time around by how smoothly the main characters all went from seeming like particularly odd misfits by TV standards to being a warm group that all fit together and that I want to "hang out with" and watch more...and they did it all over the course of 7 short episodes!
So this is your first viewing of SPACED s1? If so, I'm really glad you enjoyed it.
I love the ending to the season with Tim and Daisy dancing. It makes me want to root for them to be together, too. I want to say I'd prefer there be one show where two leads don't have romantic tension, but they're so likable together that it overcomes my reservations.

Onto the first two episodes of season 2!
Janet, it's great to see you watch the series for the first time like this and fall in love with it. I think it is pretty poignant for something in his/her 20's. Hope you keep commenting!
Back
Obviously, a show like Spaced will title its season 2 premiere as "Back." The second season always felt so different to me. I don't know how other people feel, but it was like it became less of a comedy and more as a quick paced spoof show. This isn't bad though. Obviously there's a lot of talent on the show -- there's the montage where Daisy is thinking about her mystery man. It's a joy to watch, like the shot in the airport where Marsha just walks into the frame. Usually comedies are much more straight forward with the camera work. Again, there's a parallel to the Simpsons, particularly the early Simpsons where guys like Brad Bird gave the animation a cinematic quality.
The episode was about reintroducing the gang. We get a montage of everyone like we've never seen them before, which I assume helped new people latch onto the show when it first aired. Daisy has been absent for a long time traveling, which is an interesting thing to do for a TV show: it's like we as an audience are picking things up back where they were left. That erases any of the weirdness of being away for so long since the characters have aged and lived since we last saw them -- Tim has seen the horrors of the Phantom Menance, for example. And here we are, back with Spaced, back with our characters after a small break (in their world), back with Daisy and Tim's apartment, wondering if things have changed too much or not at all....
-"Marsha's our landlady and as far as she's concerned, Daisy and me are a professional couple, but that's not really important. Anyway, she's lovely." -Mike was seen pooping with a book ... and then comes out of the bathroom like Pulp Fiction with a stare-down with Daisy? -"Well I didn't think Phantom Menace was that bad." -Robot wars! -Daisy's tan makes me uneasy. I was used to season 1 Daisy, as I had seen those episodes more often than the season 2 ones. -Skateboard crash video callback: "Our one?" -"I haven't actually figured her out just yet. She's either sweet and stupid or an evil genius." -The agents are obviously modeled after the Matrix. Due to the heavy Matrix and Phantom Menace references, the episode is placed pretty firmly in its time period, huh? -"Something's been missing." "Really, what?" "The smell." -Agent: Can you tell us where she is, Mr. Topp? Brian: ...How d'you know my name? Agent: It's written on the doorbell. Brian: ...Oh yeah. Agent: Where is she, Brian? Brian: Brian isn't on the door bell... -"You Lando!"

This definitely feels much more slick than s1. It's more brightly lit, for starters. Also, it's more upbeat because the characters already know and like each other. This helps make each little joke or riff or minor character moment feel enjoyable and comfortable. But also the show just seems to have found a rhythm. Some of it comes from familiarity (Tim and Mike's "Oooh"s and "Ohhhh"s that work as reactions to both the skateboarding video and Daisy's conversation with Marsha are that much funnier because the concept was introduced last season, and now it's being expanded, and I got to feel like I was already in on the joke). But there's also a tightness that the early s1 eps didn't have, where all the bits fit together, and a line or reaction that only takes a second or two can be really funny without feeling out of place. Even all the horror music/sound cues seemed like they fit right in. s1 is so great (probably the better season overall, but we'll see if this rewatch changes my mind) because it introduces these slapdash elements all thrown together and gradually manages to make something bigger and more satisfying out of them without ever breaking the boundaries of the smaller, more realistic scale. Here at the start of s2, it feels like our reward for sticking with the show and over time getting clued in to what they were doing. I mentioned back on the first episode how un-TV the characters felt as they were introduced. Well the re-introduction montage here is like the opposite: a series of cutaways and spoofs that is immediately fun, and all the more so because I felt as glad to see everyone again as they seemed to see each other. The inclusion of government agents and Daisy's new martial arts skills (established in a very brief flashback/takeoff of The Karate Kid Part 2) may threaten to tread into "too unrealistic" or "stakes too big" territory, but the show quickly pulls it back down into the world we know...and, anyways, at this point Spaced has earned the right to stretch the limits just a little bit. You quoted most of the funniest parts. But there were also a couple of tangents that really made me laugh, those being Tim burning all his Star Wars stuff like it was Vader's body in Return of the Jedi (even in disowning the franchise he remains reverent) and the ending where the Matrix agent is driven to misanthropy by Daisy's home videos of her trip.

Thanks, Eric and Capt! It's true, I've taken to SPACED like Abed took to Cougar Town. I would even go so far as to say SPACED should be considered essential viewing for the Community obsessive. That said, I'm not as high on "Back" as I am with the majority of season one. It's still an enjoyable episode of TV - really, I can't imagine an episode with these characters NOT being enjoyable - but a step down from the last two episodes of season one. The odd flashing shots as Tim narrates everyone's background and exploits over the break took me right out of the show for a moment. Also, the exposition seemed a little awkward, but apparently 18 months in real time passed between "Ends" and "Back?" If that's the case, a little exposition can easily be forgiven. And the colors in the apartment seem more saturated in this first episode. I kinda prefer the more washed out look of S1. -Eric, good point about the Daisy fight scene stretching things into unrealistic territory. I think that's part of why the Matrix parody also didn't work for me. As you mentioned, season one is on a smaller, more realistic scale. That aspect of the show resonated with me (much like Community S1, which remains my favorite). I'm not sure if I'm okay yet with the show expanding in scope, but since SPACED is considered a creative progenitor of Community, I ought to have been expecting this, right? -The acting is solid, as usual. Such a nice feeling when everyone gets their turn to greet Daisy. It feels like I'm immersed in their world - so much so that I was fooled along with Daisy when Tim and Mike allude to Colin having met with an untimely death. I caught myself saying NO NO NO out loud. So convincing and well-played! -I wondered what Mike thought of Daisy and vice versa during season one. They had little interaction, so it was hard to read. This is why I mentioned Mike's nice moment in "Ends" when he explains to Tim why Daisy was upset - searching for some indication of how he feels about Daisy in his remarks or demeanor. I look forward to this new living arrangement fleshing some of that out over the rest of season two. -So Mike's moved in, feeling "suffocated and unable to grow" at his mum's place. Biggest laugh of the episode for me "...and I shot the cat up the arsehole." -Mike's bathroom reading selection is "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit." Any speculation on what Mike was doing in the bathroom? Daisy's pause as she sees the book is telling. Oh SPACED, you hit these little character details just right. -Also, Mike's "your front door's open" after Daisy fell through was hilarious. He's consistently the funniest part of the show for me. -I was ecstatic along with Marsha when Daisy presented the duty-free grappa. Nice callback to "Ends" and another little detail this show lovingly gets right. -"Your tights are strobing!" Good God, they give Marsha the best lines. I'm totally working that into a conversation today. Another great one from "Ends" - "The fruit of my loins has fucked off to TopShop with the housekeeping." -Nice visual of Daisy holding the orange flower and Tim hoisting the automatic weapon, while Mike sleeps. -Capt, Daisy's tan made me uneasy as well! For a moment there, it threatened to overshadow her character. -Twist is still slightly off-putting, but I'm more interested in her now after this episode. I liked Tim's comment that she's either simple and sweet or an evil genius. Hopefully we get a story or two exploring this going forward.

Official Birdie Liveblog message thingy for Episode 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7
"Gatherings" (Rewatch) IT WAS ALL A DREAM! IT WAS ALL A DREAM! GET OUT OF THERE, SIMON! Writer’s block. What exactly would she write about? WHAT I SON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT DOOR!? Reading her diary, Simon? YOU BASTARD MATERPIECE! The face that Daisy is making is priceless. These two have great chemistry as friends. DAMMIT, DAISY! DO SOME WORK Her jeans are terrifying. MOVIE REFERENCE! Awww. Why do you raise Brian’s hopes like that? Maybe the people at Easy A saw this scene. Ohhh, that Simon Bastard. Very evil. Daisy is really trying to start this party, isn’t she? Ugh. Teenagers. Wow. The first scene that we see Twist in, she’s rubbing her nipples. Also, she’s super annoying. Poor Daisy. Ugh. Twist. Almost as bad as teenagers. BRIAN, MY HERO! How are Twist and Daisy friends?? Hehe. I want to learn more about Adam. WHOA. INTENSE MIKE Why are Simon and Mike interested in underage girls? And now Daisy is making-out with an underage boy. Great. IS THIS BODY SNATCHERS!? And this is Close Encounters? I need to go watch some stuff…
"Art" I finally got around to watching the episode twice. I needed to watch it twice because the first time is so that I can enjoy it better and laugh and stuff and the second time so I could take the proper notes. I'll try to keep up better. I usually talk to bongoes from 11:00 to the rest of the night but it shoudn't be too hard to get into a natural rhythm. And now the liveblog shall commence!
So these are the origins of Shawn of the Dead, huh. “Want a cup of tea?” This is so British. The first thing you offer a man in the morning is tea. DON’T SCARE ME LIKE THAT, SPACED Hehe. I love Simon’s friend running around in circles at the park. “Nobody’s listening”. NSA, anyone? Well, NSA is American, but WHATEVER. Poor girl. Job market today is insane what with us letting all these minorities groups work . Nice save, Simon. “Come”? “Vulva”? Hmmm. Ok Hehe. I love Vulva’s real name. What What WHAT IS THIS Conceptual art is really off-putting in Britain. Hehe. I love the cash register guy looking at the girl. Big Cocks. He nods Does she really need to know about current affairs? It sounds like a fashion magazine. You pretty much just have to know some major designer names and have some “innovative” ideas. If she really wants to know about what to wear in the workplace, I know plenty. I’ve been looking at this stuff for years. Magazines, books, TV, films. I won’t actually get to use this knowledge though, as I am going into a medical profession. Casual of strappy? Neither. Reliable and frumpy? Reliable is ok. Frumpy is bad. Stupid and glamorous? Stupid is bad. Glamarous is ok. Fashion-foward and appropriate is the best way to go. You guys! This is what I’ve been taught for 17 years! Marijuana before an interview? That’s idiotic. I know, Daisy. I’m paranoid of cat calendars too. Cats are ok. Calendars are ok. COMBINE THEM AND IM A GONER. Ahhhh. She chose the correct outfit. Well, her pants aren’t fitted enough, but that’ll pass. Wait. Does she honestly not realize that Patrick Cox is a designer name? Ohhhh. She’s “under the influence”. Well, now I’m not sure what caused her to come to the conclusion that the woman is wearing shoes from a man. Why haven’t they made a “cum” joke yet? If that’s not comedy, throw a pie at my funny bone, would ya? Awwww. Poor Brian. “Brain, painter, loser” I’ve never seen him so self-conscious. I feel like there could have been more intensity to this scene, beyond the exaggerated heartbeat sound effects. Since we’re seeing things from Daisy’s point of view, maybe we could have seen more of the effect of the marijuana going on. Like in That 70s Show, when the gang gets high and they get caught, they see the protagonist’s parents’ heads expand or contrast or float around. It’s really amusing. I’m not saying that Spaced should be as cartoony as those scenes from That 70s show, but there was a lot of potential in an episode in which one of the main characters get high before a job interview. Daisy saying silly things in her job interview doesn’t work that much because she always says silly things so there isn’t really that much of a difference. “We want it big, hard and we want it now” “I knew I should have bought huge fat cocks” Maybe the second line wasn’t that necessary, but it’s still funny. Post-feminist? What. I think that just loops back around to anti-feminism. Doesn’t it? I’m looking this up. Yeah. I still don’t get it. Don’t punch ladies, dudes…. Or do? How does feminism work again? Awwwwww. This is the most confusing relationship ever. A romantic relationship between two hetero guys, one of whom is a beautiful woman. How does that work when they have sex? I think Daisy is going to break up with her boyfriend soon. He always tends to look all enthusiastic and Daisy may seem friendly and peppy, but we all know that sitcom characters are never that. Deep inside, most are very cynical, and that is what Daisy and Tim are. By the way, by what episode did the shippers come around? Do Tim and Daisy ever actually get together? Awww. “Girl power” isn’t bad. I think I saw on TV the other day, someone said “Girl power” and no one made fun of them or mentioned it. If they really wanted to make it insane, Daisy could have said something like “I murdered a man once” to try to impress the feminist magazine people. Awwwwww. Don’t get Daisy’s hopes up, Tim. “He’s not my boyfriend” *talks in the phone* “Hello, babe” This part reminds me of Adventures of Babysitting. At the beginning when the babysitter’s friend calls babysitter (I don’t actually know anyone’s name in the movie) on a payphone and tells babysitter to pick her up. Babysitter’s friend was stuck at the bus station and she doesn’t have any money. Then she sees a man with a gun walk by or something. I need to see the movie again. Hehe. Silly Mike. It’s a long story?.... Why does this sound like a horror movie’s sound effect? “You think I should lose the waistcoat?” “I think you should burn it, cos, you know, if you lose it, you might find it again” Classic Simon Pegg. WHAT PART OF THAT SOUNDED GREAT, DAISY I think I’m starting to understand Daisy now. She’s very self-conscious and self-deprecating, but when it comes to friends, she’s very cherry and nice. It’s a little odd, and here-and-there in her character. Never boring though. Simon Pegg’s character is more established and better to understand. Hehe. Daisy and Tim are children (this is the part when they make faces at the guy at the front of the theatre). This lady with the cigarette is terrifying. Hehe. Simon Pegg is already asleep. What is this play? I NEED AN ADULT! HELP ME Hehe. Simon Pegg is tying two girl’s dreadlocks together. I love him. Do you know any famous or important people? If this is one of the first questions anyone asks you, that person is a shit. Not even a piece of shit. The whole 9 yards shit. Daisy, get out of there. I hate Vulva. I hope someone cuts off his genitals… I mean…. Kills him? Simon Peg, save Brian! Haha “We’ve gotta look for survivors and get out of here.” I’m totally using that the next time I’m in a room with people I don’t like. School’s coming back around soon. That will probably happen. I literally hated everyone in my French 3 class last semester. Why is Daisy so interested with Hoover-shit? If I were her, I'd politely say "Fuck off" and move to another part of the room. RUN! DON’T LOOK BACK, SIMON Awwwwwwwwww. Cutaway to snoring Simon. He’s so cute Awwwwwww. Brain is an oddball, isn’t he? How are they paying for this apartment? Neither of them are working. Well, not any regular full-time anyways. “I’m not supposed to eat twiglets” “Why not” “They make me violent” Awwwww. I like it when Daisy is peppy. Her accent makes her sound cute When did anyone (outside of secretary jobs or whatever) get a job by dressing like a slut? PERFORMANCE! RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT RABBIT
"CHAOS!" Colin IS pretty cute. “Her hair looks stupid all the time.” Simon Pegg, everyone. Hehe. I like this game of hide and go seek. This is… a fun story of Minty. Awwwww. I like this side of Daisy. DAISY AND COLIN: BFFs FOREVER! That was an awfully long story. I didn’t really pay attention to it other than the last part. “Don’t you just love my hair.” Why is Daisy even friends with Twist? She’s so happy and optimistic and Twist is bitter and vain. Hahaha. Why is Simon making angry faces at a cute dog? Is she wearing a dog collar? Eh, I’m too lazy for another 90s fashion style rant. POP CULTURE REFERENCE! How does Simon Pegg think that Jack Nicolson in The Shining is a “nice guy”? Why am I questioning everyone’s motives and reasons in this show? Hehe. Star Wars. I still haven’t watched the 6th movie. I’m on the waiting list. CHAOS THEORY! Things got deep. What are they saying? Jaffa cakes? Whoa. Creepers in the bushes Awwww. My dog has the bladder the size of a pea. Just like me. COLIN, NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Crocodile? In whatever part of England they live? DAISY, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Haha. I love when Daisy confused another dog for her dog and spoke to it like a human. IT’S FUNNY BECAUSE DOGS AREN’T HUMAN. Cigarette lady is terrifying. Chocolate-gray pumps? WHAT COLOR IS THAT SO SERIOUS Awwwwwww. Twist is so cute. Damn. Hehe. Simon is Han because of course he is. WAIT WHAT Mike stole a tank and tried to invade Paris? And how many kilos of coke did he consume? NINJA SKILLZ Hehe. They’re just conversing with the guard. I have a feeling that the guard has been in this situation before. Oh Lord, Daisy. I can’t even repeat what I saw. I KNOW, SIMON! COLIN IS SO CUTE. Awwwww. I do hope that Simon and Daisy do get together. They’re super cute. That guard seems very lonely. He considers the burglars to be friends. THE POWER OF MAKE-UP! HAMSTER HEATH! OH NOOOOOOOO
"EPIPHANIES" This is one of the strangest openings of an episode that I have ever seen. Is Brain angry because the people are making fun of him for looking like the people from the music video of “Come on, Eileen”? Awwwwwwwwww. What a strange dream. Mike is a pretty unique character. Actually Brain is a more unique character, I think. You don’t see those two type of characters everyday. What are they talking about? Is this a show? WHO THE HELL IS THIS GUY? This guy… he’s something. Just dances in the middle of silence. Yeah. FUN SCRABBLE TIME! Hehe. Most people fight in Scrabble over the validity of words, don’t they? Spaced really do know how to write in insufferable guest characters. I think the change of scenery for that conversation was a little unnecessary. Brian is really intense. I kinda wanna see. Not because I’m interested in seeing Brian’s penis but I wanna see his penis after literally whipping it around a canvas. Is that a normal thing to want to see? What’s up with this stage that teenagers go through? When they’re all rebellious and intense. I never went through this phase. I’m been the same person for like 12 years or so, I think. What the hell is Simon’s idea of sexy? A slightly pudgy girl in a schoolgirl’s outfit and messed up make-up? Hehe. “Her dad left.” “I thought he left when she was two.” “Yeah yeah. She is milking it slightly.” That should go in the funniest moment compilation. Awwwwwwww. Daisy is so cute with her mom. Awww. Cigarette lady was abandoned by her girls twice. Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Poor Mike. “You’re like Mr. T, but white and hairy” “I pity the fool.” I love the delivery on this line. WILL WE EVER FIND OUT ABOUT THE INCIDENT?! DAISY, LET’S BE BEST FRIENDS! Why is Daisy giving people her clothes? PARTY TIME! I don’t really like parties, did you know that? Daisy’s idea of an art piece is really interesting! Awwwwwwwwwww. Simon’s petting Colin. BRIAN, GO TO THE PARTY! I do not wish to be at this party. I guess I enjoy parties, but I don’t like rave thingys. The 90s, man. Why are they showing us their names on the screen? Awwwwwwww. That was so cute. The guy hugged Brian. The 90s: Just a giant rave party. Hehe. Who is that guy? The Mary Poppins of having fun?
"ENDS" Why do people watch these people-getting-hurt shows? Is Daisy high? Simon Pegg really does have bongoes’ head shape (big head, large forehead, heart-shaped face). IT’S ADORABLE! Haha. I love how they incorporated the skate boarding thing into their conversation. Awwwwww. Daisy’s hair really does look good. Simon: The Coolest Man in the World. Newest layer of Brain: Stalker Oh crap. My mom is going to find out that I spilled soup on her bed. TWIST AND BRIAN FOREVER! Twian or Brist! Whoa. Daisy gets intense. WHOOOOOOO! DUANE WAS AN ASSHOLE ANYWAYS! This scene reminds me of the saying that goes something like this “If you had to choose between two people you love, go with the second one you loved (chronologically) because you would have never had loved that one people if the other…. What am I trying to say?” Anyways, my point is that Simon should never get back with her old girlfriend. You can tell what kind of awful person she is by looking at the fact that she dated Asshole Duane for a while. CRISIS ALERT! CRISIS ALERT! DAISY IS GOING TO BE HOMELESS! DO YOU BELIEVE IN LIFE AFTER LOOOOOOVE? That’s the only line that me and my friend know from that song. We used to sing that line together randomly. That’s a very useful doorbell to have. Whoa. That’s the first time I’ve seen Mike in non-military garb. I NEED TO KNOW THIS STORY! Fuck you, Daisy. I’m not really sure that Daisy cares that much about Simon. I think she’s just afraid that she can lose her apartment. By the way, are apartments really sold to “couple”? Can someone verify this? Is this just a England thing? SIMON, DON’T BE MEAN TO MIKE! Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Poor Mike. Mike is really hardcore. SCARY CIGARETTE LADY! I never would guess that Mike would be the kind of guy that has two ladies after him. When was the last time that Daisy did work? Simon has a point. Hehehe. Daisy “wins” gag was amazing. This is what Spaced does best. Fun non-subtle pop culture references. I don’t really understand how the Freudian thingy works. If you asked me what these things were, I’d say “Clown thingy?” for most of them. “Butterfly… butterfly with a bomb.” “Did he leave a deposit?” Nice wordplay. I’m not exactly sure what Brian is either. He had a really weird relationship with that coworker painter guy. SCARY CIGARETTE LADY! Wow, this vonersaton went all The Shining scary. I like Daisy’s glasses. WORK, DAISY, WORK! I want to have montages as I type too! Well, I’m typing now. Hmmm. How about some Andrew Bird? Yesssssss. THIS IS POWERFUL! I’M DOING A MONTAGE THINGY! WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Twist must really have a thing for Brian if she’s willing to go on an art exhibition about poop. Awww. Brian’s happy. That’s nice. I guess there’s hope for all of us, eh. Simon isn’t a very good blonde. But he was blonde in the flashback…. Wait what? I guess the joke is that the girlfriend is insulting his hair by calling it “fake-looking”. Either that or Simon had been dying his hair for at least 10-15 years. There are crazy tonal shifts in Spaced. Usually to terrifying. Awww. Happiness. This is a very uncomfortable story about Simon and orgasms. Awwwww. I know that feeling Simon. THEY’RE SO CUTE! I really enjoy when shows give these montages (?) of the characters at the end. Awww. Brian is happy! Mike is trigger-happy! Everyone is happy! I think this was a pretty satisfying ending to the season. I think I’m really starting to care for these characters. DID MY HEART GROW THREE SIZES BIGGER? SHUT UP, IT’S A SERIOUS CONDITION!

Thank you again, Birdie, for your always entertaining liveblogs.

Change
The opening sequence is just fabulous and a lot of fun. What really made Spaced unique was that it was shot like a movie, and a fast-paced, inventive movie with moments like a close-up of each character in bed saying, "Amber..." -- they're acting in simultaneity, which makes for a beautiful set of shots for the beginning of the show. I'm not as familiar with the second season, but it does feel like a lot has changed. In watching the show years later, it's not as obvious that there was a considerable time in between seasons. It's like we jumped ahead to season 4, and while there's nothing wrong it the differences are apparent. This season is more cinematic and more prone to flights of imaginative scenes with fast-cutting and references. But I feel like it's lost some of its humor and grounded-characterization. Does that make the show "worse?" Do I not like it as much? I'm still undecided on both.
The episode is curiously titled compared to what actually happens. Spaced is progressive, but Tim's arc is the typical TV one about jobs: he loses his job, goes to a new place, and by the end everything is back to how it was at the beginning. I guess the takeaway is something about accepting the differences of your friends and co-workers. Everyone else goes through changes, however -- Daisy comes back and gets a shitty job, Amber leaves Marsha, Mike gets his own place, etc. But why not Tim? Am I nitpicking? Probably -- the heart of the show is a group of struggling 20-something's. Tim and Daisy meet because they need an apartment and can't get one on their own. They band together as a fake couple, increasing their purchasing power, and frequently the show discusses their problems with the working world. They're not experienced enough that they have great jobs, but they're still old enough that crappy dead-end jobs aren't enough. Sometimes you get stuck at a bookstore far from your dream. Sometimes you go back to an old, comfortable, and limiting job. That's what life is like to the majority of young people -- at least they're having a lot of fun.
[Amber has woken everyone up screaming and throwing things out the window] Daisy: I'm sorry! Mike: I'm hit! Brian: I'M BLIND! Tim: Buffy...? -Great fake crying with the kid running out because it's *clearly* fake. -"I was like you once." There's the beginning of a classic and cliche movie speech. -People complain about the Big Bang Theory's warped perception of nerd culture. Spaced is one of those shows that gets it right, as in the case of the hatred of the Phantom Menace. Bilbo Bagshot: What about the Ewoks eh? They were rubbish! You don't complain about them! Tim: Yeah but Jar Jar Binks makes the Ewoks look like... fuckin'... Shaft! -"I wish I had another talent to fall back on." Reminds me of Harmontown. -How did she know about the Phantom Menace? -Time gets money because of what side he's on in the great Phantom Menace bashing. Awesome. -Brian and Twist are a strange couple. -What an evil trick -- the guy who denies Daisy's unemployment money is a shifty trickster. -Spaced has a tendency to cut between scenes right in the middle of a line without pausing. "You bastard!" -Marsha's a great landlady. She's also dressed like Elvira. -Marsha targets Twist to win Brian's love. She has a lot of energy with Amber gone. -Ah, doppelgangers: Bilbo's replacement for Tim looks like Tim, and the new guy, Derek, that Tim works for (briefly) looks like Bilbo. Bilbo produces an answering machine from nowhere and presses play] Tim: [On machine; sobbing] Look, B-Bilbo, t-this is Tim. Please can I come back?! I don't like it here! Tim: [Sheepish] You got that, did you? Bilbo: I would have come in anyway. The place just isn't the same without you there. Tim: [Warmly] I'm already there. Bilbo: [Alarmed] What?! Tim: I mean I'll come back. Bilbo: Oh, right. Frightened me for a moment there. ... Tim: I got me job back. Tim and Mike: [Joyfully] Ayyyeee! Mike: I got me own room. Tim and Mike: [Joyfully] Ayyyeee! Tim: Where's Brian? Mike: He's standing in the garden with no clothes on. Tim and Mike: [Joyfully] Ayyyeee! -Daisy, your job isn't that horrible! At least you're in a well-lit, ventilated space with books.
And now let's move on to the next two episodes! Ayyyeee!

Official Birdie Spaced LiveblogHey! That guy stole my glasses!Aw ww. Daisy and that guy are breaking up.The Gua rdian, eh. Hoity-toity fancy baloney.“I’m going to Fuji to interview the Fugees, Mauie for Bowie, Malaga for the Gallaghers”. That must have been really fun to say for the Jessica Hyne s.Awwwwwwwwww . Daisy is getting dumped. Not sure how much I like the title card. It makes it look 90’s science-fiction-y.Really, Daisy? She is really d aft, isn’t she? When you’re cheating with someone, they’re not going to go “Oh, that Daisy. You’re so cute, I can’t NOT forgive you”. I’ m surprised that she didn’t get murdered. That’s a bit dramatic Daisy. …. Well, nevermind. Simon Pegg is apparently the drama queen in this scenario.I really think that Simon Pegg should be given as much material as possible in this show. EVEN MORE THAN HE HAS! This episode was had a good n umrber of Pegg mateial.Brain…. Why? I love how he uses c amouflage to hide in his room.Awwww. They mentio ned tea again. That’s adorable.“You’ve got some paint on you" great line once again from Simon.I don’t understand why they c an’t admit that they’re not a couple. It’s not like this lady is going to make them move out. Didn’t they already sign things? Does this contract mention that they have to be a couple? What if they say that they broke up? Would the mean lady person make them move out if the y have recently broken up? I do not understand the whole logistics of this show or even England, actually. Wow. Brian is the not only one with a twisted mind. Daisy is seeing nightmare inducing things now.Oh. I know how to make letters like those block letters. I can do them fast too. Apparently some people consider it a bit of a talent. I don’t know what that “accountant” bit was about.Daisy is really looney, isn’t she? Most people would walk in and go “Want a dog? We’re getting a dog,” and then bang right there on t he floor (with the other person, not the dog…. Their dog isn’t in this scenario yet…) Fun fact: A n overly happy big dog chased me a bit when I was little. He scratched me a little and I was scared about rabies. It wasn’t a traumatizing experie nce. He was just excited and I was little. Bongoes doesn’t want to get a dog though. He’s more of a no pet person, though if I would like a pet, he would prefer me get a cat. More great delivery from Simon Pegg. His lightning/dog/bamboo story is great Poor little Daisy. Dogs hated her. How much does this show reflect its actors because Daisy would be possibly the strangest person I’ve ev er met.Hehe. I did not see the part with Simon running away from Brain who was holding bamboo the first time I watched this episode. I don’t like Twist. Does this dog stay in this show for more than two episodes? I like Colin.I love how Daisy’s first thought was that H eaven was a gay clubColin is an AMAZING name for a dog (and a bo x)BACKSTABBER! Why does this guy sound like the poor m an’s Nicolas Cage? This guy is a grade-D asshole. ( Does this have as much sense as it sounds in my head?)“I’m going to set fire to him” For some reason, I feel a real connection to this side of Simon’s character. (You know what, I realized that I’ve been saying Simon instead of Simon’s character name.)There are a TON of scenes in this show that play like horror movie scenes. Dogsitting taken literally, eh. I wanna play paintball. The only problem is that I’m don’t particularly enjoy the pain of having a high pressure shot of paint hitting you. It sounds ho rrible. I do have the advantage of being short though (though that also makes me a slow runner). And I have a tad bit of an affinity for war play. Don’t tell bongoes. He’s a pacifist. Colin is so cute. There are so many retellings in this s how.Was anyone else thinking that Brian was going to sa y that his dog was the same one who chased Simon that day when he was struck by lightning? WHAT HAPPPEDN WHEN TH EY WERE LITTLEThey have the weirdest soundtrack s for this show. A Christmas song?Dance, dance, dance! This show really delv es into insanity.I think that cellphone rang a bit before Simon tur ned around. This guy is such an ass. MIKE, YOU SON OF A B ITCH! MY HEROThat was so bad-ass and also comical. When Mike spit out the yellow paint… that was so inspired. This is such a touching momentI just love watc hing Nicolas Cage guy going in the ambulance. I hope he never has kids.I really would have loved to see Simon’s reaction to his three greatest fears all in one place. Spaced: 1 part horror movie, 1 part soap op era-like flashbacks and retellings, 1 part pop culture (I never really understand how to do the “parts” things)

Watching The World's End made me want to watch more Spaced. This guy is the best non-main character.
