Arguably the most successful spinoff show ever, Frasier stars Kelsey Grammer as a radio show psychiatrist who moves to Seattle and has his father Martin and then a physical therapist (Daphne Moon) move in with him. To round out the core group there's Frasier's brother Niles and Frasier's producer Roz. Much of the comedy is mined from the differences of the erudite Frasier and Niles with the no-nonsense ex-cop Martin, the outspoken and promiscuous Roz, and the eccentric British gal Daphne. Oh and there's a Jack Russell Terrier named Eddie who became popular for whatever reason. I don't understand -- he doesn't have the best lines! Frasier ran for an impressive 11 seasons, the same as the show it spun-off from, Cheers, and collected 37 Emmy awards. It's a sterling example of a modern multi-cam comedy, and one that's lost because of the division that now exists between the 30 Rock single camera shows and the broad, crowd pleasing Big Bang Theory multi-cam shows. But Frasier never talked down to its audience and often had intricate plots with witty dialogue.

I seriously can't wait to get my set, and start going through the episodes. I know I'll take a huge break somewhere down the line (I've been stuck on S8 of Cheers forever), but the first few seasons should go by pretty quickly.

Capt, what would be the best introduction to the show? I was gonna show this to a friend who's never really watched it, but didn't want to start with episodes like "Out With Dad" or "The Ski Lodge." I'm sure they'd be good, but they seem great because of your fondness and familiarity of the characters.

The Great Frasier Watch of 2013......starts now. I'll be updating my thoughts on episodes and seasons as I progress through the series, however fast or slowly that happens. Expect my first post sometime tonight or tomorrow. Goodnight Seattle.

I like how according to those DVDs Frasier slowly turns into a dog.
Here's a good primer to the show
"The Good Son": As the pilot, it sets up what the show is very well, but it's not a super complicated show to follow and the pace and tone are a little off. In the first few episodes, and the pilot especially, Martin Crane is too gruff. But it is important as the start of the relationship between Frasier and his father.
"Dinner at Eight": The third episode is arguably better as a "pilot". This is the episode that introduces Niles to Daphne, and his reaction simply one to behold. Niles secretly yearning after Daphne (though it's not a secret to Frasier) would inspire many jokes to follow through many, many episodes. The bulk of the episode is about Niles and Frasier going to a hacky steak restaurant, so this is a good one for laying the groundwork for Martin's relationship to his sons.
"The Show Where Lilith Comes Back" Lilith doesn't appear in many episodes, but it is important backstory for Fraiser. However, the episode is worth it just for each character's reaction to her character, and it goes toward understanding each character a little better.
"Ham Radio" Often cited as one of the funniest episodes, it's also one where a background knowledge of characters isn't necessary. It's a zany episode that goes off the rails as Frasier tries to host a radio drama.
"The Two Mrs. Cranes" Daphne's ex-fiance visits her in Seattle, and she pretends to be married to Niles, who quickly warms up to the idea. However, as more people enter the apartment, and an important fact revealed, the lies spin out of control.
"My Coffee With Niles" This episode sets up the two brothers and their relationship well. The entire episode is set inside a coffee shop, structured about the simple question, "Are you happy?" Frasier won awards for its writing for its witty, intelligent writing, and if you don't love this episode you probably won't love this show.
"Out with Dad" It's the comedy of mistaken identity, and what I'd call their best episode ever. Martin has to pretend to be gay, leading to a complicated set of circumstances escalating with each new lie. It's hilarious all throughout, and it works well when you know the characters.

'Ham Radio' is definitely one of my favourites.
Frasier (the show, not the character specifically) does episodes where characters have to pretend to be something they're not really well. Another episode where this happens is 'Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz'.

"Space Quest": The second episode is arguably better as a "pilot". This is the episode that introduces Niles to Daphne, and his reaction simply one to behold. Niles secretly yearning after Daphne (though it's not a secret to Frasier) would inspire many jokes to follow through many, many episodes. Capt, just watched "Space Quest," and Niles does not meet Daphne yet, and I'm fairly certain you mean the third episode ("Dinner at Eight"), which I'm about to watch. Especially because the "Space Quest" was pretty mediocre.

The Great Frasier Watch of 2013
Season 1:
1. "The Good Son" - B 2. "Space Quest" - B- 3. "Dinner at Eight" - B+
Episode Spotlight: "Dinner at Eight"
"Dinner at Eight" was an especially good episode this early on. A lot of great lines, and especially good delivery from Niles. The ending is also fantastic, because it lets Martin call Frasier and Niles out on their snobbish behavior, and what's even better is, the episode doesn't allow Frasier and Niles to change who they are overnight, because they're not successful in chasing Martin down and apologizing, and get stuck eating the food they didn't want in the first place.
-Niles, denying any feelings towards Daphne: "Oh for goodness sake, Frasier! I'm a happily married man. Maris means the world to me... Why, just the other day, I kissed her for no reason whatsoever." -Frasier, clarifying something Daphne says to Niles: "She's psychic... We've decided to find it charming." -Niles ordering his steak at The Timber Mill is a wonderful comedic moment, and the waitress' reaction matches it.
Great line that the studio audience doesn't laugh at: -Frasier: "Hi Niles! Where's Maris? Are you two taking separate elevators again?"
Overall, a promising beginning to a stellar show.

I think the show nearly hits its top form by the end of the first season.

The Great Frasier Watch of 2013
Season 1:
1. "The Good Son" - B 2. "Space Quest" - B- 3. "Dinner at Eight" - B+ 4. "I Hate Frasier Crane" - A- 5. "Here's Looking at You" - B 6. "The Crucible" - B+
Episode Spotlight: "I Hate Frasier Crane"
Easily my favorite episode so far, "I Hate Frasier Crane" is a great look at Frasier's immature side. When a newspaper critic writes in his column, those dastardly four words: "I Hate Frasier Crane," Frasier is overwhelmed with anger, immaturity, and pompousness. The scene where he uses his radio show to launch (petty) personal attacks on the writer is a classic, and it leads to some hilarious one liners, one of them being Roz informing Frasier during his rant that there's a caller on hold having a problem with delayed gratification, to which Frasier impulsively shouts: "Well he's just have to wait!" This string of episodes was great, because the show is finally figuring out where each characters' strengths lie, and it is slowly but surely starting to capitalize on all of them.

Have you watched Cheers? I'm sure it would be fine if I dove right into Frasier, but I was going to watch Cheers at some point anyway. MAYBE IT WOULD ENHANCE MY FRASIEXPERIENCE.
Or maybe I should just say fuck da police, I mean the rules, and watch them concurrently. Oh, that would be bad. ASS.

I agree with this, although I personally prefer Frasier. Though I only saw the first three seasons of Cheers, and then random episodes throughout the rest of the seasons. Diane and Sam do make separate appearances in Frasier, and he refers to his past, but anything relevant is briefly explained.

Episode Spotlight: "Beloved Infidel"
This was an interesting episode in the way it sheds light on the mother of Frasier and Niles. It is revealed to the boys from Martin himself (after incessant nagging from Frasier), that Martin strayed outside of his marriage and cheated on the boys' mother. It's a sad revelation, but not quite as sad as what follows: when Frasier confronts the person Martin supposedly had the affair with, she reveals that Frasier's mother had the affair with her husband. It's a devastating reversal as Martin tries to protect the image of the mother in his sons' eyes, but only Frasier knows and he promises not to tell Niles. The final scene, where Frasier and Martin bond over something in common (Lillith cheated on Frasier) is extremely poignant, and I love when the show doesn't mind settling in for a dramatic beat like this one.

"Can't Buy Me Love" - A- 15. "You Can't Tell a Crook By His Cover" - A
Episode Spotlight: "You Can't Tell a Crook By His Cover"
This is easily my favorite episode of the first season thus far, and could go down as one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. It's a great fun premise where Martin challenges Frasier by inviting two cops and one ex-con to his poker game and seeing if Frasier can correctly identify the ex-con. Inevitably, Frasier makes a complete jackass of himself, but the entire sequence where Frasier is "deducing" certain points about each of the characters is hilarious. That's only the first half though, what's great is that Daphne accidentally agrees to go out with the ex-con without knowing of his history, so naturally Niles has his moment to shine as well. His delivery of: "Don't call me irrational, you know that drives me crazy!" is hilarious. Even some great Daphne moments can be found in here as well, which is always a welcome surprise.

I love how this show can occasionally go serious and try to paint the nuances of a sometimes strained -- but strengthening -- parent-child relationship. Martin's call-in to Frasier's show during the pilot was a nice, brief glimpse of this, and so was episode at the steak restaurant where Martin finally chews the boys out for being rude snobs, and as a tribute to him they decide to stick it out and eat the whole damn steak. The sentiment manages not to feel forced, nor undercut when they lighten things up with a joke. I mean, hell, it is a comedy, obvs.
One of my favorite moments of the kind of balancing act they do was when Martin lied to Frasier that the memory of his wife was what was holding him back from pursuing the neighbor he "met" through the telescope, when actually it was a fear about how she'd perceive him and his leg. Martin's a caustic old coot, but he has a real soft spot for Frasier sometimes, and he knows him well enough to know this is an excuse he'd leave alone and respect. This is also a nice showcase of the old man's vulnerability. And it led Martin to a great scene with the eavesdropping Daphne. DOUBLE GOOD SCENE.
The episode about Frasier's mother's affair was my favorite to date so far. I think it might have made me cry. I don't know, it was a long time ago. Last week.
Last episode I saw was the one where Frasier hangs out with the model's kid. Sometimes he's eminently competent as a therapist, but he has his hilariously naive moments when he's out of his comfort zone, and even when he knows better, his vanity often leads him astray, at least for a while. I like it. And I just love the pompous, avuncular "I'm listening."
These are some of my thoughts about Frajer so far.
OH, I also read on the Wye-kuh-pee-DYE-uh that Kelsey Grammar was pretty coked up or drunk or both for a lot of this, which simultaneously saddens and impresses me that he's so good.

Episode Spotlight: "Give Him The Chair!"
Well, I've reached the end of season one, and in doing so have discovered my favorite episode of the season: "Give Him The Chair!" What starts out as truly one of the funniest episodes to date (more than one memorable sequences spring to mind in the first half of the episode alone), it quickly turns into one of the most moving scenes in a television show I've ever seen. When Martin is listing off the reasons why he wants his chair back, I was almost tearing up. It's a simple, quiet, and touching moment the show is so good at pulling off despite how zany it can get at times. Despite not being a fan of the final 5 minutes (I just thought the resolution was weak in separating Frasier from everybody else was a little unnecessary in such a great ensemble episode), the first 3/4 of the episode are truly remarkable television.
I shall start season 2 soon.

OK. I am now 11 episodes into Frasier and I'm really loving it. I won't do a write up until I've finished the first season, because then I might actually be able to figure out how I'm going to grade the episodes. I really don't remember loving a TV series this much so early on in the run. Favourite Characters so far: Niles and Eddie. Even my dog loves Eddie!

I really didn't like it. Probably a B- at best for me. My first A would probably be for Beloved Infidel. I just finished You Can't Tell a Crook By His Cover and I loved it. Another A episode. Niles's face as they were fleeing .... hehe.

You whaaa?! I think my love for that episode stems from how awkward and cringe-inducing humor is my favorite kind of humor. Frasier's embarrassing behavior is a wonderful reversal on the typical "parent embarrasses the child" trope for extra awkwardness. But "You Can't Tell a Crook" is even better, so there's still hope for you yet.

So it was Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz? What did you think of the wacky misunderstandings that led to a point: Spoiler Niles dressed up as Jesus Christ, while Frasier pretends to be Jesus, sniffing some medicine in the bathroom with a Christmas tree?
